Robert Miller  I am not sure what the first post said but I applied for STD (Short Term Disability) for my first surgery and will do so for my upcoming second surgery. I have insurance through my company but the insurance only covers up to 60% of what the state doesn't pay. So let's say the state had STD and pays 50%. Then my insurance would cover 10% to get to 60%. The other 40% is covered through PTO (Paid Time Off = vacation) from my company.

Getting the money from the state can be difficult. I spent MANY hours on the phone and it took months after they finally paid. Also note that if you get back 50% you still have to deal with the state and insurance for the other 10% and have to cover the remaining 40% with your PTO . That was my case. Your situation might be different. But at least for my case it means there is no/little incentive to go back part time.
