Doctor Q&A: Am I Too Old for the Ross Procedure

In this video, Dr. Juan Pablo Umana, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Miami Health System, answers an important question many patients ask: “Am I too old for the Ross Procedure?” He explains how age, overall health, heart function and valve anatomy can influence whether someone is a good candidate for this advanced aortic valve operation.

Dr. Umana also discusses the case of a healthy 56-year-old patient with a bicuspid aortic valve, aortic stenosis and an ascending aortic aneurysm. He explains why patients in their mid-to-late 50s may still be appropriate candidates, how the aneurysm can be repaired during the same surgery and why age 60 may become an important consideration when evaluating long-term valve durability.
