Surgeon Q&A: Who Qualifies for Robotic Mitral Valve Surgery?

Robotic mitral valve surgery was once limited to patients who met a narrow set of criteria. In this video, Dr. Marc Gillinov explains how growing surgical experience and advances in robotic techniques are expanding eligibility, allowing more people with mitral valve disease to be considered for a minimally invasive robotic procedure.

Dr. Gillinov also discusses how robotic surgery can now be used for valves with calcium, mitral valve replacement, repeat operations, and many cases of mitral valve prolapse. He explains that surgeons may also perform a robotic Maze procedure or ablation to treat atrial fibrillation during mitral valve surgery. (Video posted on August 20, 2026)
