Magnesium Supplements: What Should Mitral Regurgitation Patients Know?

Can magnesium supplements reduce mitral valve disease or improve mitral regurgitation? In this video, Dr. Dominic Emerson of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center answers a patient’s question after her previously diagnosed regurgitation was no longer detected during a follow-up echocardiogram. Dr. Emerson discusses what existing research suggests about magnesium supplementation and explains why it may be useful primarily for patients who are already magnesium deficient.

Dr. Emerson also explains why patients should be cautious when adding supplements to their daily routines. Because supplements may not be as thoroughly studied or regulated as prescription medications, patients should tell their doctors everything they are taking. This is especially important because some supplements may interact with medications or cause unwanted reactions. (Video posted on August 21, 2026)
