Aortic Dissection Risks for Bicuspid Aortic Valve Patients with Dr. Chris Mehta

For patients diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm, the possibility of an aortic dissection can create significant fear and uncertainty. In this video, Dr. Christopher Mehta explains why dissection risk cannot be determined by aneurysm size alone. He reviews the factors doctors consider when evaluating an individual patient, including body size, family history, connective tissue disorders, aneurysm growth rate, valve function and whether the aneurysm has remained stable over time.

Dr. Mehta also explains how specialists balance the risk of dissection against the risks of preventive surgery when deciding when an operation may be appropriate. In addition, he discusses typical surgical thresholds, the importance of ongoing monitoring and the relationship between bicuspid aortic valves, aneurysm growth and aortic dissection. His insights help patients better understand their diagnosis and have more informed conversations with their medical teams. (Video posted on July 17, 2026)
