Rita Savelis A certain percentage of OHS patients have to get pacemakers, often a few weeks later, because their electric current lines are damaged during surgery. I got mine 2 weeks after OHS because my heart couldn't get back to beating fast enough. It's definitely not fun to have surgery again or to end up with a pacemaker, but it happens. (I wish I had known beforehand that it could happen because it came as a total shock that I wasn't prepared for...but then I wasn't prepared for a lot of post-surgery events).

Wendy Vani I am wishing you well. My sisters husband is going thru this right now and the whole process has just been so crazy! We knew that 5% of patients could end up with a pacemaker, but never thought it would be this complicated. How long have you had your pacemaker and what side effects do you get now???

Rita Savelis I've had it one year and the pacemaker has no real "effect" on me but it is a big unsightly bulge on my small frame. I was a bit traumatised by the surgery 2 weeks after OHS because I was awake and no one talked me through it even though there were lots of nurses there as well as the doctor. I just wanted someone to say: "Everything's going fine." I was still recovering from OHS and just didn't want ANOTHER medical procedure.... and a small computer under my skin! But living with it is not a problem. Mine lasts 14 yrs or so, so I should have replacement surgeries in the future.
Alas, pacemakers are fairly common for lots of different heart reasons...
