Hi,
My father-in-law had a valve replacement with a triple bypass one week ago and he is back home. The doctors here in the Netherlands haven't been very helpful in regards as to the do's and don'ts after surgery and luckily YouTube has helped greatly with this matter. However my concerns are not physical in nature, I have already notice the psychologial differences in my father-in-law and boy the ''nasty'' has shown up in his personality. For someone who has always been kind and loving, he is now angry, condescending and not very much like himself. I have read on this site, that many people have experienced such things with their loved ones, and it broke my heart to read - Is there any suggestions regarding psychological matters? How to regain wanting to live, or feeling self worth? Could anyone make any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Also I am in the Netherlands, I am English but my Father-in-Law only speaks Dutch - Does anyone know someone who could speak Dutch? Thank You and I am happy Adam created this site, and it is greatly appreciated to everyone who has shared their stories.

W. Carter At one week he is probably in pain and not feeling too sociable. That is one of the worse operations you can have, valve and triple bypass. Its a double whammy. Don't look for him to dance a jig for a while. With the bypass surgery unclogging his arteries he will be feeling like a new man in about 3-8 months so it will get better, and his attitude will most likely improve.

Kimberly Biddick Being in pain and not being able to move around very well can definitely do a number on someone's personality. I know I was probably not very friendly at 1 week post op either. He's also probably frustrated because he's used to doing things himself and now needs help for even the smallest of tasks. Hang in there, it gets a little bit easier and a little less painful every day. The first few weeks are definitely very rough though!!

susan kotansky As they said!! The first week is absolutely the hardest...you feel like you've been run over by a truck BUT it gets better rather quickly. It's hard not to be able to do things for yourself and be dependent. I cried for most of the first month. Everyone thought I was depressed however, as soon as I started to feel better physically my whole attitude improved immensely. Be patient with him...it's hard.

Sophia Ridley Imagine that you've done an Olympic standard iron man competition with absolutely no training.. You'ld be a bit ratty. The physical tiredness is considerable, and he's also dealing with the affects of all the medications. It's also very frustrating having to ask people to do things for you.... And probably for those being asked.

Count to 10 and grit your teeth. The love and kindness you show will welcome 'normal' him back quicker.
I'ld be amazed if any patient / partner hasn't had a row before the end of week 2!
