Here it is nearly 4 months since my heart valve surgery and I feel so blessed to be on the road to recovery. My surgery went well, my recovery has gone well, my healing continues and now my rehab phase 2 is ending. I am continuing my rehab at St. Luke's Hopsital in Chesterfield, MO where there is a wonderful staff and great facility. Thanks for the words of encouragment from all my heart valve friends. Also, those who are waiting can trust that Adam Pick has set up a wonderful tool in this web site to assist you so you may have a successful surgery. May you have a blessed hollday season
It has been wonderful to have cardiac rehab 3 times a week. A plus is that I have dropped 10 pounds and am close to my high school weight! My only issue is htat the BP systolic reading still stays a bit high, and the bottom of my sternum still hurts a bit. But it has only been 7 weeks!!
What a surprise when I could not exercise today. My rehab program is going well, except today I could not exercise because my BP was 200/100. I am working with the cardiologist to get my blood pressure under control.
Keep the faith!
I started my Cardiac Rehab at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield last Thursday. My frist session was an orientation then a meeting with a rehab doc, nurse, physical therapist and nutritionist. I went back on Friday and met with Ande for a class for one hour followed by one hour of PT. I think that it will be good for me. It will last for 3 times a week for 13 weeks. I am looking forward to feeling better each week. I will be exercising under supervision for 3 days a week, and doing a similar program on my own for 3 days a week. Please pray that I will have patience during the bone healing that is going on. That seems to be my largest challenge at the moment, but my spirits are good.
Check Up Went Well - Heart Rehab to start next week!

I just got home from a check in with my cardiologist. All is going well. My readings are good, my shingles are clearing up with no complications, and I am scheduled to start heart rehab next Thursday after Labor Day. I feel very blessed that all has gone so well.
I had my check in with my internist on Thursday, and the good news is that all is going well. The shingles are under control with medication, no heart related issues, and now I next see my cardiologist at the three week mark on Wednesday. I feel very blessed that all is going well. I am out walking 1/3 mile twice a day now at a local park. The rhythm of sleeping, eating resting and repeating will soon be comlimented with cardiac rehab.
Blessings to all who have walked with me on this journey. Richard and Linda take special care of yourselves!
I was released on Monday from the CC and we stayed in Cleveland to wait for my follow-up on Wednesday. We then started for St. Louis and made it to COlumbus, OH for the first night. Slept like a baby bt noticed a slight rash, which I thought was asssocitied with surgical prepration. On Thursday we traveled to Terra Haute and all went well, but the rash had spread a bit. On Friday we arrived in St. Louis and I checked in with my primary doctor and discovered that I have shingles. I am now taking medication and have not had any further complications today. I will have my first check-up with my primary doctor next Thursday.
My surgery on the 11th lasted about 4 1/2 hours. Dr Gillinov was very pleased I had a successful mitral valve repair and received a new cow valve in place of my aortic valve. I was in ICU for less than 24 hours before I moved to step-down status. Richard and I visited before my surgery and his discharge. The. He came to see me with his son Jason before he left for Chicago. Lynn I tried to find you On Friday but imagine you were in ICU I am in room J61-24 and will look for you on the weekend I am expecting discharge on Monday and then will stay for follow-up on Wednesday before driving to St Louis The key is to do the breathing exercises and to walk !! I feel blessed by the power of prayer! All is well! I will post a picture with Richard later today
My wife Ande and I arrived in Cleveland on Thursday. All my routine tests went well. Today my heart catherization revealed no evidence of blockage or concern. Tomorrow is pre-op day and a meeting with Dr. Gillinov. I appreciate all of your loving support.
My wife Ande and I made it safely to Columbus, OH to spend the night with friends. Tomorrow we travel on to Cleveland CLinic and will stop by and check out where everything is. Friday I will have my bloodwork, chest x-ray, echocardiogram and EKG. Then on Monday I have my heart catherization. Tuesday we meet with Dr. Gillinov and talk through the valve options before surgery on Wednesday. I am eager to have this process get underway!
Thanks friends for the suggestions on what to do for the weeks before I come to Cleveland CLinic. I have read Adam;s book, spent time with the guided imagery, had my own sense of peace during my prayer time. We leave on Wednesday morning. My first tests are on Friday, then a heart catherization on Monday. Meeting with Dr. Gillinov on Tuesday, and surgery on Wednesday.
As you can see in my story I am heading to Cleveland for mitral valve repair and aortic valve replacement. I have continued to be asymptomatic and feel great. Is this pretty typical for most valve problems? My surgery is on August 11 with Dr. Marc Gillinov. Any last minute suggestions before I go about self care in the last two weeks?
