I had a follow up echocardiogram last week having been first diagnosed with mild/moderate AS five years ago. I have been asymptomatic. I met with a cardiologist yesterday and have severe/critical AS with a .69cm2 opening and 4.9 blood velocity. He said no stress test is needed as if I presented to the ER with symptoms, I would have rolled up to surgery.
I've been riding my indoor bicycle trainer 3-5 hours per week and have even competed in a virtual race. Doctor wants me to cut that in 1/2 and only exercise when someone else is home. I meet with another cardiologist tomorrow to schedule an angiogram and then a surgeon. Looks like this process will go fairly quickly. I'll be 54 this summer. My cardiologist said the decision will be made between myself and my surgeon, but he's suggesting a mechanical valve given that I'm closer to 50 than 60. I understand probabilities and presently weighing the differences between a mechanical/warfrin vs. a bio valve with the expectation of a future re-do. Among my hobbies is blacksmithing (I literally make knives but also have exposure to high heat, abrasive wheels, etc.) I'll know more in a couple of weeks. This will be as difficult for my wife as for me. For the past 3 years, she's spent 7-10 days per month in Ohio taking care of her elderly mother and brother who has a disability.
Alex Sagan Any discussion of a TAVR that would allow a valve-in-valve replacement down the road?

Rose Madura Hi Jeffrey. I always recommend a second opinion. And remember that the valve decision is yours to make. Study all the options. The surgeon may have a different opinion. God bless you.

Timothy Andre Hey Jeffrey, welcome to our community of heart warriors. I agree with Rose and Heidi. Study all the options. I had the Ross Procedure and that may also be an option for you. Many factors determine that as a viable option, but be sure to research that also. Adam has many videos in the learning center that will help educate you on all your choices. I highly recommend a second or maybe even third opinion. Ultimately you get to choose what's best for you. Good luck and God bless you. Feel free to ask questions as there are many many heart warriors on here that are willing to share their own experience, myself included

Alex Sagan Jeffrey, staying fit and working out daily, similar to you, allowed me to live with minimal symptoms for may years, and delay surgery. You should be proud of that. But I reached a point where the stenosis was just too severe to ignore, and I had to accept that and do the valve replacement. Afterward, I could see that I was had actually been more symptomatic than I thought. Btw, I was also originally counseled to do OHS and get mechanical valves, but eventually decided to do my first surgery as a TAVR at 55yrs. The results were excellent—almost no recovery and great function—but YMMV. Good luck!
