My husband had open heart valve repair surgery in March 2022. Consequently, he has a chest full of hardware: rings on the mitral & tricuspid valves, an AtriClip, a 3-lead pacemaker, & (presumably) sternal wire. About 3.5 months later he developed epigastric discomfort & occasional feeling of burning/fullness (to be fair he does have a history of GERD). We thought it might be due to some of the post-op meds & it did improve after discontinuing the aspirin & lisinopril. But it does persist. Given that the heart does touch the stomach & esophagus can any or all of the implants be causing this?

Marie Myers The implants in the heart are unlikely to cause reflux -type symptoms. Your husband should make sure that these symptoms are not angina (chest pain) being caused by Coronary artery disease . Has he been seen recently by his cardiologist to discuss this? It may alternatively be simply GERD-like pain caused by his stomach/esophagus. Might need to see a gastroenterologist to treat this type of symptom. Hope you get some answers!

Greg Lewis I had Gerd, after my OHS. I was on a ppi for it. We got some adjustable beds. That took care of it, and now its gone. Remember that area where the little valve is ( right in the middle) took a beating, and takes a long time to heal. I have been recovering since June 2021. And that area can still give me issues. I have come to hate that area! Lol
Ilene Heller We have consulted with both his cardiologist & GI doctor. His coronary calcium score was zero so we know that he does not have coronary artery disease. He has been on Protonix for years with good effect (same with elevation of the head of our bed). We hope that he can get another endoscopy soon to rule out any damage to the esophagus (he had 3 transesophageal echocardiograms in 5 months - one before surgery & 2 during surgery). It's a little late for this, but I am also concerned about how well the medical device industry is regulated & overseen.

Greg Lewis Our son has a lot of gerd problems. He has also been scoped. They have not found a cause yet. Once he got really sick, and was hospitalised. He had an intestinal blockage. And that continues to be an issue. It acts like gerd.
