Hi Klara! I have found that setbacks can be very tough to handle. Very emotional. Very disappointing. I have been disappointed, so many times, so i know what you are going through. I really do. I feel like I want to let you know that every, single, time that I had a disappointing setback, it got better! Usually I just needed to let the doctors work through what needed to be done, and, for me to do, what they told me to. This valve setback, will get better. Hopefully it's just a echo error, but if not, they will tell you how it needs to be dealt with. But..it will get better. It will be resolved. Life will go on. You will be happy. You have such a great attitude!! Positivity, and happiness, is what kills disappointment!!
It will all work out. You'll be fine. Wishing you all the best!

Klara Čičić Thank you so much for your uplifting words!! Yes, I feel all those emotions you mentioned. But I am trying hard for acceptance to prevail. And also kind of silly, but comforting thought - it was all for the kids, every mistake in my rehabilitation period from lifting, not sleeping, being under a lot of stress, giving all of myself - it was all for my children... Nothing is worth compromising your health, but they are worth everything. Hmm. 🙁
Rose Madura Yes Klara, they are worth everything but so are you. Please take care of yourself for them....🥺

Hi Klara, I think you asked me what kind of mitral valve I got. Well, I don’t know!! It’s mechanical. I need to look in my chart. I honestly did not worry about the make and model. My surgeon is fantastic and I just know he picked the best thing for me. I do hear the ticking sometimes at night. There was an old tv commercial for Timex watches that used to say “Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking”. When I hear my valve, I think of that and laugh!

Deena Elani Hi there, Diane, so glad you are doing well! You will probably get .something in the mail as to the manufacture of your valve, etc. It is registered. I keep the ID in my handbag and made a copy for my files. While you will unlikely ever need to apply this info, as in another surgery or a device recall, it doesn't hurt to be safe about it.

Rita Savelis Diane, that's exactly how I felt. My surgeon picked the best valve for me (deciding when he was in there and saw the state of the mitral valve). I don't care about make or model - even if I have a slip of paper that says what it is. I also hear my ticking sometimes if it's very very quiet. Now, 8 years later (I have 2 replacement valves) I very rarely hear my valves.

Rita Savelis I think "ticking" will be more related to your body than to a manufacturer. After surgery I wanted to have a pillow on my chest to create a boundary between me and the world. I felt so vulnerable. Occasionally when it was very very quiet and I was reading on the sofa I would hear my valves. So I'd put a pillow on my chest and the sound was gone. There was another double valve replacement patient on the site and we would joke about creating a t-shirt with padding. But honestly the ticking is just not an issue. Take care.

Klara Čičić Dear Rita I just saw this last post of yours. It is so informative because I was searching for an anwser what is really like to hear the ticking and are there ways to reduce or even diminish the sound! I am poor sleeper even withough the clicking. Plus I am very thin, and basically have no breasts to create some sound isolation hahaha. I feel my heart pounding in chest since I can remember. So I am reasonably afraid of what it is gonna look like one day when I get a mechanical valve. So, pillow on your chest does help!!!? I thoguhh since the sonud comes from "within", external stuff can't help. And those foamy earplugs? Can those reduce the sound? Or paradoxicaly increase it? I just wanna prepare myself for one day.... Thank you so much

Rita Savelis I never wore earplugs! And a pillow rarely. But sometimes I wanted something between me and the world. And sitting on the sofa with a pillow felt right. I am thin and have small breasts (in fact I only have one now since breast surgery in 2021). The ticking was really the absolute LAST thing that bothered me after heart surgery and I don't know that skinniness has much to do with it. The pillow was about protecting me from the world. I think that almost everyone "hears" and is aware of their heart more after surgery, no matter what kind of valves they have. Take care Klara.

Hi Klara! How are you doing? I hope you're sleeping more and better. I just came off the curmarol and started taking asprin (Salospir). I was on it six months instead of three like they do in the US. How long will you be on it (or whatever blood thinner you're on)? I'm interested in seeing how they treat you in Croatia and Germany. Also, were your pacing wires left in? I read that in the US they are removed, but mine were left in! I asked nearly everyone on my surgical and recovery team and they told me they're suppose to be left in. (Sorry for referring to the US so much, but I was born and raised there and, of course, most of the members on this site are from there so it is my point of reference)

Klara Čičić Oh that's why your English is so good. I am fine, thank you. Nights are still problematic but let's say it's getting better. I am still on warfarin, plan is three months but doc already warned me it could be longer, we'll see based on tests and everything... After that - baby aspirin. Croatian cardiologist is now the responsible one, we'll see if he agrees with the aspirin part. Germans said I can always contact them for anything...but their role is over... My pacing wires were removed on post-op day 3, same as drainage tubes. There must be good reason why they left yours?
I wanted to ask you did they pay you back any money? We had to give extra amount just in case of complications. Contract said that any extra amount will be given back. I am hoping for that money back....still nothing. How much did your op cost if you wish to disclose? We payed 38000 euros. 🥵

Angela Meletiadis About 14000 euro. I suppose the 9 days in intensive care was costly ( they took precautions because I had Afib after the surgery.) Wow, yours was a lot, but then, Germany has higher costs than Greece. My surgery costed one year of my teacher's salary. I really hope you get some money back. I knew this would be expensive and we began saving a few years ago. One drawback from choosing private care is that there is no telling what you really need and what you don't need, so you pay for what they want. (In the US, insurance companies keep the cost as low as possible and therefore limit the treatment to only what is needed.) The pacing wire issue is scary to me but the follow up Dr, the local cardiologist AND the radiologists told me it's routine...??? I'm still in pain at the inscision sites. My right breast hurts a lot. Acupuncture helped very little. I will ask for January off from work also. My heart is great. If I wasn't in so much pain, I would even try a little tennis. I know I'm getting better, but it's going at a snail's pace! You can write me at ameletiadis@gmail.com for more private conversation. I've got lots of handy mothering tricks up my sleeve, not just from raising four children, but from teaching hundreds of others!

Good morning Klara!! I saw your post that said the inside is a whole other situation. If you are referring to the lack of sleep, i can definately relate! I could not sleep for awhile. Not because of kids ( mine are all grown up ) but because of the RLS that i got after surgery, and just all the anasthetic, and other drugs. Ok, this is gonna get personal, but i want to tell you it will be ok.
I remember not sleeping for 3 days, and i was getting pretty messed up. In my head! The RLS was unbearable, and it attacks right at the moment your gonna sleep. So i got some meds that really helped that.
But i still could not sleep. Through many tears, i asked Jesus to please knock me out, at 3,4,5 in the morning. One night i got on my knees and begged him to put me to sleep. Then i woke up in the morning! After that Jesus was my help for my sleep! Pretty amazing!
This was after a long time of the recliner, sleeps ( sort of sleeps )
I know what your going through. I know how it feels. I know that it looks to have no end. I also know that eventually it will get better.
I had to use some sleep aids. No choice. I hate drugs, but they got me through.
Sleep when you can. But remember it wont be forever. If it gets real bad, seek some outside help. Not sure what that would be there, but here i went to my doctor, who i trust. Here, you can go to our hospital for help. Days of no sleep is no joke. Especially when you are recovering.
I also know what i think you mean when you say you look ok, on the outside, but inside...people around me told me " your looking good. You have good color " they had no idea that i was struggling pretty bad. Only my wife knew. But thats ok.
I hope your sleep is getting better? If not, it will eventually. Talk soon!

Hi Klara , If your wounds were my wounds , I would redress them with inadine ( a dressing , you ask for it over the counter at the chemist / pharmacy ) and then cover with a dry dressing . I ‘d use the inadine for 2-3 days and then revert back to a simple dry dressing if the wound looks clean and had started healing .

Hi Klara. I am really inspired by your courage and perseverance. I, too payed for my surgery out of my pocket because the Greek state health system does not provide minimally invasive techniques. My surgeon, Fitsum Lakew practices at Clinic Bad Neustadt in Germany and she flew to Thessaloniki to perform the procedure on me. The entire procedure cost me a year of my salary (public school teacher) but no regrets. - I bought my health back (my spiritual life was purchased by Christ, on the cross). You did the right thing by going to Germany. May you recover quickly and peacefully. Enjoy your family!

We are not hungry nor roofless nor cold (well, that last one might change this winter, haha), as long as we have health and eachother we are very very rich people...Thank God we have secure jobs for life, that certainly helps :) Thank you for your kind words and I am wishing you all the best...

We are almost in Austria in this small town where our great friend, wedding man ( I mean best man) lives. He's a doctor from Croatia who moved to Austria for work. Tomorrow he will draw some blood to see my INR level. So everything turned out perfect. I pray to God we come home safely to Croatia tomorrow. Will keep you updated.

Klara Čičić Thank you! You will do great! The feeling now is rubbish but it will get better, it already is better. All I can say is that Infos on this site helped so much! For example, what to bring to the hospital, what to except in first 24-48h, what would the feeling be... For example visual disturbances were mentioned here so they weren't a surprise, lung fluid after drainage out - same thing, change in apettite, taste and smell - same thing!! (I feel like those first weeks of pregnancy, I can't even look at some food, let alone eat it.) And it was all mentioned here by these lovely people, heart surgery veterans. Keep reading this site. It was my daily ritual before op and it still is. So precious and reassuring. Adam Pick is a hero. Good luck!
Claudia Kwalbrun I loved your post. It is so reassuring to connect with people like you who can can reassure me and help me get through this stressful time. Klara, You are my inspiration.

Hello Klara, your big day is almost here. I hope you are all settled in Leipzig and ready for the next chapter of your heart journey. All of your planning and research has paid off and now you are in Germany patiently waiting for your turn to join the recovery club. When I traveled to NYC for my surgery it finally became real that I was going to actually have heart surgery. I did my best to stay busy talking with friends and family and also did a little sight seeing around the city. I treated myself to some delicious food knowing the hospital food would be less than exciting and I did some meditation to relax my mind. I pray that you are at peace and ready for your surgery. You are a strong woman and I have no doubt that you will do great.
Your presence on this website and participation with this community has been a blessing. You are encouraging and an inspiration to many all while you wait for your turn to be healed. That isn't easy but you do it with ease. It's now your turn to sit back, focus on yourself and your upcoming recovery journey. We will all be cheering you on and praying for you that everything goes smoothly and your procedure is successful. May you, your surgeon and supporting staff have a blessed day on Monday. Hi Klara , I hope you ‘re feeling ready , not long now . Sending you lots of good luck and best wishes for the 26/9
I feel like I want to let you know that every, single, time that I had a disappointing setback, it got better!
