My boys had an ECHO for football and the 14 yo found out he had a slightly enlarged aortic root and my 16 yo has a bicuspid aortic valve, leaking "a tiny bit" but no narrowing, and an enlarged arota (above the root) of 3.6. I am so scared and want to know if they will need surgery. No more sports or lifting and another ECHO in 6 months. The next 6 months will be torturous and I am not if there is anything that I can do.

Civita Fahey Hi Elizabeth.. those of us who have bicuspid valves know the feeling.. I think this point its wait and see for a while until either the leak gets worse of the root gets bigger..I found out I had a biscupid valve when I was 50.. I just had to have it repaired 9 weeks ago and Im doing very well. Hopefully by the time your boys ever need surgery, they will never need open heart surgery.. the TAVR will be gold standard by that point. best of luck and this site will have many answers for you..

Catie B Elizabeth, I'm so sorry you've had this scare with your boys. It sounds like you need reassurance from their cardiologist and to be able to ask questions and come to understand their diagnoses. The issues that need surgery usually develop over years, often many years. Leaking a tiny bit is nowhere near time for surgery. An enlarged aorta usually doesn't need to be addressed till it reaches 5.0. I hope you can sit down with your sons' cardiologist and get filled in about these concerns. And no, there's usually no treatment until when and if things ever become severe.
I was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve; I had a murmur and some valve changes at age 15. I didn't need surgery till age 57, which by then included taking care of my aortic root and aneurysm.
Try not to worry. Best to you all!

Laura Jacobs Oh Elizabeth, I am so sorry to hear that. Of all things you want your children to be always in tip top health and able to pursue their activities as they wish. Thank goodness that their issues were found so that things can be managed. I had my surgery 5 days ago. I was given the same information that Civita provided to you. TAVR is rapidly improving and becoming accessible to a much wider audience. All the best to your boys, and wishing peace for you.

Phyllis Petersen How awful for you and your boys! I would try to find a cardiologist who is well-versed in sports medicine to get a fuller evaluation of what level of sports they can participate in. Being active can help in so many ways, physically and emotionally, so knowing their options will be important, especially since many people do not need surgery until later in life.
