Nearly three years after my aortic metalic heartvalve replacement and I still get very loud and strong banging of the heart every now and then which unsettles me. My pulse goes up, past 80, quite often, despite the beta blocker, especially after food and drink. Finally I dont know wether my reformer pilates class is putting too much strain eventhough I take it easy. Doctors are so evasive as to exercise. They say I should not exert myself too much and I dont but how much is too much?

Rita Savelis Eight years after double valve replacement I also occasionaly get loud and strong banging of the heart. I am used to it, as well as to many long-term effects of heart surgery, and it no longer unsettles me. It just happens. I have a high pulse rate as well. My advice is to keep taking pilates and doing movement of any kind. You can feel your body and will know when it is too much. I take a dance class and don't really have the stamina for it but push myself as much as I can. I get short of breath and will never be able to build up more endurance, but I keep at it. Of course you should listen to your doctor and ask him/her pointed questions about your fears of exerting yourself too much so that he/she will give you the answers you need without evasion. Take care.
