Yumiko Ishida Not sure what you mean by front lap pillow, but most of us found a power-assisted recliner to be very helpful. Ask your surgeon about what you can or cannot do with the scar. Mine didn’t want me putting anything on it until it healed completely. Some people were told to apply antibiotic ointment. Once it’s healed, many people use silicone tape to reduce its appearance. My skin reacted to the adhesive of the tape, so I use silicone gel.
What questions should I ask my cardiologist when determining the decision between mechanical or tissue valve replacement?

This probably will give you some good idea what to ask. https://www.heart-valve-surgery.com/learning-center.php The general "rule" is below 50 get a mechanical valve and above 50 a tissue valve. But there are a lot of other things to consider including other potential health issues, life expectancy, how willing you are to be a bit more conscious what you eat if you are on a medical valve, how good you are in taking your meds, etc.

James Roberts The general age rule also depends on the valve. For aortic valves they tend to recommend the mechanical if you're 50 or under whereas the mitral which is what I'm having, the age recommendations are 60 and under for the mechanical valve. It will also depend on lifestyle too as you have to be careful with more extreme activities if you are on warfarin.

Yumiko Ishida Most of the questions are for you to answer, not the cardiologist. Your age, medical history, activity level, etc. If your age is in the gray zone, one of the critical determining factors is whether or not you are likely to be able to withstand repeat OHS in the future. If you regularly see doctors outside of cardiology, it is important to consult those specialists. Most of my doctors didn’t have an opinion on valve type, but my neurologist did, so I’m glad I consulted him. If a doctor recommends one type of valve over another, make sure you ask why.

Robert Miller @James Roberts, I can't speak for the aortic valve but for the mitral valve I was quoted the 50 years "rule". Then again, my second surgeon suggested a tissue valve despite being just a bit above the threshold. I think this is just a gray area and depends on many other factors.

James Roberts That's interesting. I think yes 50-60 is probably a grey area for the choice. I do see in this video the surgeon saying that the AHA guidelines state 65 or under for the mechanical valve for a mitral replacement (at 5:08). Obviously though this will depend on individual circumstances though which have to be taken into account https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wd-2SH5qfCo&t=333s
