Saturday afternoon the medical team decided I was able to return home. Oh what a pleasure it was to sit in a comfortable chair!
I want to first thank my family for taking such good care of me for the past few weeks. We all got a lot more than we bargained for and so Mandy, Trevor, Reece, Nathan, Josee and Rick - THANK YOU.
And thanks to all my brothers and sisters who spent time sitting with me and making sure Mandy and Nathan had someone to talk to.
I'd also like to thank Fran and Cheryl - friends we've never even met. Both my kids found your voices of experience very helpful. And thanks to everyone for all their well wishes.
One of my dear friends mother was also in the hospital and I went to say goodbye to them as I was leaving. I had a stack of paper work and they asked what all I had been given.... I of course replied.... a bunch of crappy hospital food, 5 more doctors appointments, 3 new prescription drugs, some bruised up arms, a big scar down my chest and .... a heart that works. I am already feeling better and hopeful things will continue to improve. My main goal is to recover quickly and be able to lift things by July when our precious granddaughter will arrive.
I'll be home from work for a while yet so anyone who would like to stop in for a visit is very welcome.
Hi Everyone, So I was just up to see mom. She was a bit upset today as the staff told her that she likely has a few more day's that she will need to stay in the hospital. They are trying to regulate her blood as it is currently too thin from the blood thinner they started her on after the surgery and until they can regulate that they will not discharge her. So she's a bit frustrated and bored and has given me the go ahead to let people know that she is up to a few visitor's. She is doing a lot better and is her normal self again but the unit she is on has diet restrictions so no caffeine, sugar, salt products and also no flowers. She is in the General Hospital unit 3F room 2.
Well mom is progressing like we would all expect. She's been moved again yesterday to 3F in a semi private room which is not too bad. They have removed the catheter and she was even walking without her walker. She's pretty much back to her normal self other than the fluid which they are still medicating her for. Once that goes down a bit more she will be ready to go. She's craving all kinds of food and Rick even brought her pizza for supper last night. She's been walking like a pro and even went to Robins for some decaf coffee and outside for some fresh air yesterday. Hopefully a few more day's and she will be back home.
Hi Everyone. I'm really glad to report that mom is doing very well today. She's enjoying her private room in CSU (Surgical Telemetry) as it's nice and quiet and warm. She slept pretty good last night and was very alert and chatting like her old self today. She's walking more and more each hour and has found the back door so is talking about "getting out" which is great. Hopefully a few day's. As she she's still working very hard to recover visiting is fairly limited so we encourage people to let her rest and once she's feeling better she would love some visitor's.
We've had a hectic few day's. Mom has been recovering slowly and was still in SICU which was pretty crazy the last few day's. Lots of things happening in there so we've not been able to get in to see her all that much. However, today she was finally moved to another unit. She's doing well enough to move so hopefully that will help with her recovery. She is still fairly groggy from everything that's happened and is not quite up to visitor's yet so we will keep everyone posted and let you know once she's up for more company. Thanks to everyone for your well wishes. We appreciate it.
Mom is still progressing, slowly but surely. We had a minor set back with her kidney's again so she's back on a medication for that. They did an ultrasound of her heart again today and should know results tomorrow. We've noticed some confusion with her thoughts starting late last night. Mixing up dreams, noises and conversations, likely due to the acidic nature of her blood and the work out she got yesterday for really the first time since the surgery. Since the new med's today though her levels have gotten better and by supper she was talking a lot more clearly. Thanks to those of you visiting. Hopefully soon she will be up for more visitor's but for now it's still a fairly slow process so she needs as much rest and rehab as she can get.
Hi Everyone. Mom is doing very well today. She's been sitting up 3 times already today and had her face washed, teeth brushed and has eaten breakfast and lunch with a bit of help today already. She's been asking to get the catheter out which is good. Her blood pressure and heart rate are still a bit higher than they would like so she is still being medicated for that and will stay in SICU until that's more under control. They have taken her off the morphine now as it was making her too sleepy which they don't like but she say's the pain isn't too bad. She's still pretty swollen so were working on getting her to move her hands and feet a bit more to reduce that. All in all she is progressing which makes us all very happy. Thanks again for all the kind thoughts and words. I will be printing them and taking them in to read to mom now that she's up and talking a bit more.
We are pleased that mom has done very well today. Many more smiles today. She has a new day nurse today (Cara) who I can't say enough good things about. Mom has been stable all day with one little instance of a high heart rate which they are medicating for. Overall today was a very good day. This afternoon they even had mom standing for a bit. She is talking and laughing which makes us all very happy to report.
Mom is doing better today. They just took the breathing tube out and she is showing to be more comfortable but still has the oxygen mask on to help her oxygen levels. All the tests the staff are doing are showing imporvements from even yesterday and they hope to have her sitting on the edge of the bed by tonight. Thanks again for all the love and thoughts.
We just had a consult with Dr. Baird who informed us that mom is fairly stable today and doing much better than last night. She is having some kidney trouble and may need dialysis but that is currently on hold while her levels are holding strong. She will need a permanent pacemaker which will go in sometime this week. She is still intubated and will remain on the ventilator for now, but they want to take that out as soon as they can. Thanks for all the kind thoughts. We will keep you posted as things progress.
Mom had some complications last night. her blood has elevated acidic levels which they can't find a reason for. She is also having kidney problems. They took her for a CT of her abdomen at about 3am and couldn't find anything. They will be checking to see if the bleeding tube has a blockage or if there is blood surrounding/restricting the heart from beating normally.
they have put the breathing tube back in to assist with her breathing as a precautionary measure as they didn't want to have to wait until there was trauma to do so.
hoping to talk again with Dr's after 8:30.
Mom has been up periodically today. they have removed the breathing tube and she is breathing on her own with a little oxygen. Her heartbeat has dropped quite low a few times today so they have her on a temporary pacemaker to regulate the beat when it starts to drop. The Dr will evaluate whether she will need a permanent pacemaker over the next couple of days. We will likely see her a couple more times tonight before we head home.
She will probably stay in SICU for today and tomorrow and then move upsatirs.
Mom is out of surgery and doing okay. we got to see her briefly but she was still under. the nurse said that she will likely be asleep until supper time and they would then look at taking out the breathing tube etc. and hopefully have her sitting tomorrow at some point.
we hope to be able to visit with her in a few hours and i will post again when she is awake.
After a 7 1/2 hour wait today Mom's surgey was cancelled. Apparently, there was another patient that the doctor had to attend to and they don't do surgery after 4pm. The surgery will be re-scheduled but they did not give a date at this time.
Mom is still groggy this afternoon from the sedatives given this morning and will likely be resting for the remainder of the day.
Well, after waiting since the middle of January there's not much longer to wait! Tomorrow (Wed, March 31) is surgery day. My surgery is scheduled for 12:00 noon and should take about 4 hours. I’ll then be in SICU for 12-24 hours, then to Surgical Telemetry (on 3rd floor) for 12-24 hours, then to 3F for remainder of hospital stay. Mandy and Nathan will be posting here for me for the next few days.
I’m anxious to get this over with but am trying to stay calm and busy, so today passes easily. I have one last task for work to finish up this morning. Then, Nathan arrives this afternoon, so that will help to distract me. And the other distraction for today is that Mandy found out her, Reece & Trevor may have been exposed to pink eye on Sunday. Since it is very contagious we are now trying to figure out if they all have to stay away from me???
That’s it for today, then off to the hospital first thing tomorrow morning (have to be there at 8am).
Once again thank you to all of my heart buddies, family and friends who have written in my journal and given me their support, love, prayers and good wishes.
Family and Friends,
Just thought I would give you a quick update as I received the call yesterday regarding my surgery.
* On Monday, March 29, I will be at the General Hospital at 8am for the pre-admission clinic. This will take about 4 hours and then I'll return home.
* On Wednesday, March 31, I am required to be at the hospital at 8am and am scheduled for surgery that day.
* The procedure is expected to last 3-4 hours.
* Dr. Dewar is the surgeon who will be performing the operation.
* It is expected that I will be in the ICU for the first 24 hours following the procedure. Then I will be moved to a room. I am expected to be in the hospital for 5-7 days.
* Thanks for all of your support!!!
