I was recently diagnosed with moderate to severe mitral valve prolapse and moderate to severe mitral regurgitation. A transthoracic echo verified this and showed mild left atrium dilation. The rest of the echo showed normal results. My symptoms are none to mild. My cardiologist prescribed 2.5 mg amlodipine 1x daily and wants to wait two months to evaluate.
From what I have read, a more aggressive approach is usually taken because of better outcomes when the patient is mildly or less symptomatic. Any thoughts or opinions?

Klara Čičić This question rises often. The timing of the surgery isn't easy to establish. I had dilated left atrium, as well as mildly dilated LV, moderate to severe mitral regurgitation AND paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Those fibrillations were the straw.... but still, in my case, not all cardiologists were pro intervention (I asked for second and third opinion). I guess decision was mainly mine in the end based on expert's opinions, lot of reading (latest guidelines), education... Waiting didn't make sense since things won't get better, only worse. And having a successful repair (in a skilled surgeon's hands) as an option makes early intervention more favourable. Some heart warriors experienced similar situation where you have to be your own advocate in the end.

Carmel Ramsey Klara, thank you for sharing your experience. I hope everything continues to go well for you. I will see if I can speak with someone with good mitral valve repair experience for a second opinion.
