Ever since my aortic valve replacement I have been having what was described by one dr as a diaphramic convulsion - sometimes just known as hiccups. It is a singular event (just one hiccup), quite intense, a sucking in of air. I would be very interested in knowing if others are experiencing this and what you have been told is the cause and name for this condition.

Marie Myers I have read that hiccoughs occur in 3-7% of heart surgery patients. Since The heart lies so close to the diaphragm, it is possible that an injury or pressure on the phrenic nerve (which innervates the diaphragm ) can cause hiccoughs after surgery. Hope your issue resolves soon!

Only my surgeon had heard of it (but never had it in any of his patients) with none of the cardiologists, doctors or nurses never having heard of it. Of course down here in New Zealand we have a much smaller population obviously with a tiny number of people experiencing this. I really would love to hear from anyone else who might know of this condition - knowledge is power!
Marie Myers I don’t remember any people on this website commenting on hiccoughs, either…
