Hello. Although i was diagnosed at an early age with heart issues, complications are now coming to the forefront. I was just told that my medical recommendation is to undergo open heart surgery for aeortic stenosis within the next 45 days. I must admit that even though I kind of prepared myself for this news, I am a bit nervous. I joined the community in hopes of gaining some insight and perspective on what to expect. Thank you!

Catie B A warm welcome to you, Belinda! I'm glad you found your way here. I'm not far from you, just NE of FW. Unfortunately, fear and anxiety are nearly inevitable, but these surgeries have become safer and safer. The Heart Hospital/Plano has earned an excellent reputation with valve surgeries and there are some stellar, highly experienced surgeons who operate there. You can read lots of patient stories here, ask your questions about procedures, recovery, etc., and hopefully have some of your fears soothed. I hope you'll keep us posted about your journey!

Dan Vechiola Hi Belinda! I recommend getting involved with this site. Its a game changer! I was told my entire life that I would need my aortic valve will need to be replaced. The time came 1 year ago and I was scared. I googled "I need heart valve surgery and I am scared." The first hit on my search was this site. I became involved and learned that I had choices. I learned that Northwestern University which is in my home town was No. 7 in the country and Dr. Patrick McCarthy was the best in the world. Most importantly, I learned very quickly that I wasn't alone. The information and people on this site gave me to strength to march through the surgery and recovery. I couldn't have done it without this site which gave me the courage to look the surgery in the eyes and have it done. Good luck Belinda and don't hesitate to ask questions or share your fears.
