Currently I am not booked for any surgeries, but I have lots of questions and living in a very small town I can't seem to get any answers that help to make my problems go away. Every day is painful for me as I can hardly stand, then walk on my feet. my feet begin to swell each morning with the swelling travelling up my legs and leaving a tremendous amount of pressure behind my knees. I was advised by a doctor to wear compression stockings and I do, but that brings about another problem. The compression keeps the swelling down in my feet but my knees and up in to my chest begins to feel as though they will burst after a couple of hours. I become short of breath and have pain then down my left arm. Once I remove the socks those painful spots get some relief, then my feet swell again. I also get a reoccurring ulcer on my right leg that won't heal without the socks on. A couple of days ago I had a xray which showed I now have an enlarged heart and bronchial breathing disease. I just don't know what to do from here - do I wear the socks or is it worse to move the pressure from my feet? I am 62, working full time and trying my best to get healthy. Anyone have any ideas for me. I soak in Epson salts, I raise my feet when I can, I have cut out caffeine and salt over the past 3 weeks. I know I need to exercise - kayaking is the best I can do as I can't use my legs without pain. Appreciate any help I can get,

Emily Rowley A big hello to you Arlene and welcome to this community where there is always someone who knows an answer āŗ You shouldn't have to live in pain each day, there could be somethibg underlying so I would defiantly be talking to the Doctor (or another Doctor for a second opinion) in regards to your symptoms and get your heart checked out. Do you feel out of breath and is it fluid build up?

Petey Bello Hi Arlene, Welcome to the community! I would got to a bigger town or city & get a second opinion. I also live in a small town. The first cardiologist I went to, told me to go home that nothing was wrong with me. He blew off all my questions. Thankfully I had a second opinion lined up in a city, which brought me to surgery with a difficult repair. If I had gone in sooner, my repair wouldn't have been so difficult..If I had waited I would have had a replacement...so it is important to get the correct advice! I then had to travel by plane even farther to have my surgery since I needed a doctor who specialized in difficult repairs verses going to the closest city...Good luck to you, please get a second opinion if you can! God Bless

Mary K I agree with the advice above. We I was in a somewhat similar condition before my surgery ( not edema, the swelling, but unable to catch my breath, the diagnostic cardiologist a Cleveland Clinic told me to " go home and do NOTHING" while waiting for my surgery two weeks later. He really wanted to hospitaluzed me, but probably could not because of insurance. I was in heart failure. This does not sound like the time to be concerned about exercise. Go to a highly regarded cardiologist.
BTW, I was out on my bike for an hour this morning, a year after my surgery. You can do it!
