About Me (In My Own Words)
There are certain events like heart surgery that I put in a category I call “speed bumps in the highway of life.” And, as speed bumps go, heart surgery is a pretty major one, so it’s important to get it right!
When I learned that my mitral valve regurgitation had become severe and I would need surgery to correct it, I switched into research mode to identify what is most important to ensure successful correction of this condition. After much research, I created the below list of qualities which I feel are most important to look for in a cardiothoracic surgeon. Find a surgeon who:
-will do everything possible to repair the valve before replacing it
-performs a very high volume of valve repair surgeries
-performs minimally invasive surgery
My online research showed that Dr. Marc Gerdisch of Cardiac Surgery Associates in Indianapolis, Indiana, ranked at the top for every single one of these qualities. So I scheduled a consult with Dr. Gerdisch. He answered all my questions and made me feel very comfortable that I would be in the best hands with him as my surgeon. During that same visit, I worked with his awesome team to schedule my surgery for June, 2022.
I am happy to report that I returned to my very active lifestyle within a few weeks after surgery and am recommending Dr. Gerdisch to everyone I talk with. I can’t say enough great things about him and the amazing healthcare team at the Heart Valve Center at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis. They quite literally gave me my life back!
