About Me (In My Own Words)
I discovered a diastolic aortic murmur while taking a physical diagnosis course in 1975. An M mode ultrasound suggested a bicuspid aortic valve. I was told I would need surgery sometime around age 80. The valve had other ideas and so I'll be getting the SAVR soon, at the age of 72. The surgeon feels I'm too young and in too good of shape to do the TAVR (he does both) as I may well need a replacement before age 88 or so and at that time a TAVR would be the preferred procedure with far fewer complications. Also, this recent European study suggests SAVR is superior to TAVR in young bicuspid patients: https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/tavi-fails-noninferiority-surgery-younger-patients-2024a1000bnn?ecd=WNL_trdalrt_CS4_pos5_240701_etid6637271&uac=1674HR&impID=6637271
