About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse in 2004 and have been followed since then. In the fall of 2021, an echo revealed by my regurgitation was "probably severe". After a visit to a cardiologist who told me if its severe, I will need surgery, I had a TEE. A nurse called me and told me it was severe and to see a surgeon. My cardiologist did not discuss the results with me. If fact, I could not get time with her for another 6 weeks. Instead of scheduling an appointment with a surgeon, I did a lot of research and learned that a repair is markedly preferred to a replacement, that finding an organization that does of lot of mitral valve surgeries is key for a successful repair and there were minimally invasive options. So, I decided to seek another opinion and went the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. My cardiologist there, Dr. Sari Padang, was amazingly thorough and spent a lot of time understanding my condition. In the fall of 2022 she determined it was time for surgery and referred me to Dr. Arman Arghami.
I had minimally invasive, robotic assisted mitral valve repair on Jan 5, 2023. An echo the day I was discharged showed no regurgitation. I am 6 weeks post surgery and feel great.
