About Me (In My Own Words)
For some unknown reason, I developed endocarditis of the mitral valve. Dr. Bolling was the expert my Val surgeon at the University of Michigan where he performed 150 to 250 mitral valve surgeries every year. In my case, I had a mitral valve repair and I thought this would be a fix for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, the mitral valve developed calcification, and I have developed significant mitral valve stenosis. The stenosis is significant enough that I’m developing pulmonary hypertension, though my cardiac function is preserved at this time. As a preop test, I had a left heart Cath, which showed two vessel disease involving a non-dominant RCA and a 90 to 95% LEAD with collaterals from the circumflex. The CAD was a surprise because I don’t have any major risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.. nevertheless I do have a strong family history, which is probably the underlying reason. I’m typically going to undergo a micro replacement and a one vessel bypass of the LED University. I did go to Lagone Michael Center in New York for a consultation as well as a consultation at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville with Dr. Haney. I was going to have a consultation with Dr. Gillinov at Cleveland clinic since he’s an expert and mitral surgery
Since I’m 61 the question is do I get a mechanical valve or a bioprosthetic valve which may need to be replaced in 10 to 15 years. I’ve learned that the data for durability is mainly from the first and second generation while the third generation has only 8 to 10 your data. As such the long-term durability of the third generation valve isn’t quite yet established. If anybody has any information about the durability of the third generation valves, I would be greatly appreciative.
Thank you and good luck
