About Me (In My Own Words)
About 2 years ago, my annual physical doctor recommended I consult with a Cardiologist because I complained of slight shortness of breath. A stress test and echocardiogram revealed aortic valve regurgitation (leaky valve) and an ascending aortic aneurysm (bulging aorta). During the next 2 years, my symptoms got worse and now I'm gasping for air after climbing just one flight of stairs.
It's time to do the surgery because my quality of life has deteriorated so much that I have to think twice when someone says "let's take a walk." If there's any uphills, I'm in for an uncomfortable trek.
I'm having a portion of my aorta replaced with a dacron tube that looks like a white dryer vent hose about the diameter of a quarter dollar. I'll also get a pig's valve to replace my dysfunctional aortic valve.
I'm fortunate to have a wonderful and caring support team of local towns people. There are distinct advantages to living in a small New Hampshire town with only 630 residents.
I've completed the 236 pre-op tests (just kidding) and I'm preparing to have my heart fixed Thursday, June 3, 2010 with prep at 5am. Yikes - I haven't seen a 5am in years.
