About Me (In My Own Words)
Diagnosed with rheumatic mitral stenosis in 2007 at age 32 after developing a pneumonia that would not clear. I have had three OHS surgeries to date. I was not new to this as I have a daughter born with CHD that had been through 3 OHS even before I was aware of my heart disease. I had valvuloplasty in 2008 and 2011 in hopes to relieve the stenosis. That was only temporality successful. I am a long-distance runner and continued to have difficulty with minimal exercise as my valve continued to be stenotic. I then underwent my first surgery for a mitral valve repair in 2012. Post repair I developed hemolytic anemia and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Worsening mitral regurgitation took me back into the OR where a replacement vs a second repair was on the table. A second repair was completed as the value just had a small tear that was able to be fixed. In 2020 started to have mitral stenosis symptoms ( SOB, fatigue) again and found out that my stenosis had returned. On March 25, 202 went in for Mitral Valve replacement. ON-X valve. Current I am two months post op adjusting to coumadin pretty well. I am along distance runner and have run over 20 half marathons during my heart valve journey. I am so thankful to have had wonderful Drs. to help navigate me through this. I am feeling well and hoping to return to long distance running soon!
