About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve when I was a child. The cardiologists informed me that at some point in my life, the valve would need to be replaced. After a recent annual visit to my cardiologist with an echo, I was told that my aorta is enlarged and I need to have a ct scan to determine how enlarged it is. After the ct scan I was told the aorta has an aneurysm and needs to be replaced with in 2 to 3 weeks. I quickly started researching the procedure and finding the best surgeon for me. It has taken longer than 3 weeks to get to this point for various reasons but I am now a little over a week out from surgery. The last major decision I think I will have to make is what type of valve to use. At my age (50) I am leaning towards a mechanical valve, specifically the ON-X. I do not like the idea of taking blood thinners for the rest of my life but it is my understanding that the level of thinning is lower than typically required when using the ON-X valve. I am feeling confident that my procedure will go as planned and I will feel better than I do now when I am fully recovered.
