About Me (In My Own Words)
Hello, my name is Alex and I'm from Romania (sorry for my English). I'm 39 years old and 9 years ago following a medical examination I have discovered that I have a bicuspid aortic and 43mm ascending aortic aneurysm. Since then every year I have done a medical examination (echocardiography). Now, following the last medical examination, my aortic aneurysm is 51.8mm which is more than 50mm so I must do a surgery. Every year the aneurysm increased by 1mm. This period I went to 4-5 cardiological surgeon and 2 of them came with another approach, not the classical one as Bentall procedure. They suggest me the Tiron David procedure to spare the bicuspid aortic valve. The surgeons told me that the advantage of this procedure is that I can keep my own aortic valve for the moment. Now it's not necessary to change my valve with a metallic one, it is working well according to echocardiography, and maybe my valve will last until I get older to get a biological one.
Also they told me that during the surgery they will know for sure if they can spare my own valve or not.
So, now I'm wondering if it's worth it. We know that a BAV doesn't last a lifetime, only if it is a short life :). I don't know if I want a second open heart surgery. Of course...in 10 years many things can happen. Maybe in 10 years the heart surgery will become less invasive.
That it is my story and I hope I will have more :)
