Definitely YES! I was exercising regularly before my surgery and intended to go back to doing so as soon as the Doc would let me. He would not release me however until I did the cardiac rehab. Turns out that was extremely important. Since I had to wear a monitor the whole time I was in rehab, a problem with my heart rhythm was detected. Turned out one of the meds I was on after the surgery HAD to be changed. If I had not done the cardiac rehab, I might have gone straight back to regular exercise with potentially disastrous results. So the short answer is take the time to do the cardiac rehab. Besides everyone there will be wonderful and you will probably have as much fun as I did with all the people there.

I went for cardiac rehab after having an aortic dissection, and for the first time ever, I enjoyed exercising. Your activity is carefully monitored by trained personnel (heart wires, breathing, etc. ). You also meet people of all ages who have gone through heart problems in one way or the other. You have gone through a lot to get to where you are. Don’t takes chances.

Yes because it is more than monitored exercise. It is exercise with folks that understand what you have been through so days it might seem a step backward, you get a big support and I am one that really is not a group support kind of person. After exercise, my blood pressure was really low and I had to raise it before I could leave. To raise it I had to drink water and did so with my new low bp buddy who years later is a good friend. My husband and friends were supportive but these folks understood. You are right you can exercise alone, but not the same. Ps my first rehab group was too clinical so switched and found another rehab group if positive fun folks who supported one another. Hang in there, it’s nice to return to the exercise routine😁

Trevor Woods Thank you Patti. I agree 100% that having people to support you that know exactly what you’re going through would have a great impact on my daily attitude and perspective. It’s one thing to go at it, but to go at it alone would be a much bigger challenge. Thank you for reminding me about how much I will gain from others as well.

Do rehab? The answer is yes and yes and yes. The monitoring takes the concern out of "am I doing too much" and lets you progress with the help from onsite personnel. The facility I attended was both heart and lung rehab and everyone was more than willing to share their experiences and progress to date. Nothing but a positive event in recovery.

Hi Trevor, tomorrow is my 4-year anniversary of AVR. I have exercised my entire adult life (54 now) and have always been in very good shape. I did the rehab at 6 weeks out, and although they didn’t really teach me anything I didn’t already know, I did find it helpful. The techs would scold me when I was going too fast or too hard, and also gave me confidence to do some things I wasn’t sure I felt ready to do. Definitely worth going IMHO. I went 2-3 times a week for about 5 weeks. And on my 3-month anniversary of surgery, I was hiking the Grand Tetons, and felt great!
Best of luck!

Hey Trevor
If your cardiac rehab program is good-I would highly recommend attending. I have worked out all my life and had BAV surgery four months ago. I attended a twelve week program and also continued to work out at my gym on my own. . I learned something new every week about the heart and health. I was carefully monitored especially when doing a new exercise, which gave me peace of mind. They did a pre-class stress treadmill test, and post test -and I spoke with their cardiologists about my results, which again was great-and will get tested again at the year and two year mark. I had questions for their staff pretty much every week, which always got answered. I am so grateful for having attended. Good luck with your recovery.

Trevor Woods Hello Dan, I appreciate you thinking of me. Well, my date is set for February 26th. I’m taking it one day at a time. It’s very draining emotionally but I’m putting my faith in God that all will work out. If God is for us, who can be against us. Mostly just trying to stay slightly active with some walking and bike riding. I put on a few pounds over the holidays, so I’m hoping to drop a few prior to my surgery date. Any words of advice moving forward would always be greatly appreciated. God bless you!

Dan Baltazor it's great that you have a date, that gives you some peace of mind. It's good that you can be active prior to your surgery as that will help with your recovery. I couldn't be active a couple months prior to my surgery and I think that has made my recovery a bit harder. I say don't worry about those few pounds. I lost 15 pounds through surgery and that didn't help my recovery at all. I had to put that weight back on but I didn't have an appetite for quite awhile. I know we all go through this a little differently but one thing I have noticed is everyone says the same thing about their appetite after surgery.
It is an emotional time waiting for your surgery. God will get you through. He got us through. Stay connected. Trust your medical team. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Trevor Woods Well Dan, I just wanted to let you know that God was with me through this journey and as he always does He watched over me and guided my surgical team through a great procedure. I’m doing very well, in fact I stayed in ICU for a day and a half. I am being discharged tomorrow for a total of 5 days in the hospital. God and my family got me through and I am so grateful, thankful and humbled to be on this side of it now. Dr. Vaughn Starnes is amazing, he is definitely the Maestro! He and his team here at USC did a phenomenal job with me. For those of you preparing for this journey, just keep God first over everything. Research what is best for your particular situation, find a team that you believe in whole heartedly and have faith in the process. In the end you will be happy you took the time to prepare yourself and others for this journey. Good luck to all of you heart warriors. I pray that each and every one of you find peace and comfort in your process. Now I will take it one day at a time, but I am truly thankful for the support I was able to receive from many of you here. We are all in this battle together and we need to be able to lean on each other for support in this process. Feel free to lean back on me if there is anything I can answer to help put your mind at ease and peace in your hearts. God Bless you!
