Hello Judi-
Thanks for the upbeat post speaking of the light at the end of the tunnel for those of us entering that tunnel to heart valve replacement. I will think of your words and follow your positive example when my surgery is here hopefully on Aug. 20th.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I was on a beta blocker for 5 years before my aortic aneurysm surgery because they wanted to take the pressure off of my heart and aneurysm. I worked out with a trainer those 5 years and we just worked around the HR being off. The beta blocker also made me very tired and I lost my energy. After my AAA surgery they took me off the beta blocker which is wonderful.... My husband now calls me the energizer bunny. I'm on no BP meds at this time.

Hi,
What's your dose of the beta blocker? I'm on 6.25mg twice a day of carvedilol. I had more side effects when I first started, feeling tired (I took naps), dizzy when standing up just a bit. I also take lisinopril 10mg once a day. In my cardiac rehab (I'm 57) my target heart rate was 145, I got up to 135 several times, never could really go much higher. It's definitely the beta blocker that's inhibiting this in me, and I'm sure it is with you. Speak to your doc about it. I decided that it's a very useful medication for me to be taking right NOW, and I hope that in months or a year or so that I can reduce or eliminate it. I have a doc apt on 5-9 and will discuss this with him then. Best of luck to you! (oh, several people in my rehab group are on higher doses of a beta blocker and they are similar to you in the low heartbeat even when working out hard)

Appreciate you letting me know where you are with your beta blocker. I, too, am on Carvedilol at very low dose of 3.125mg twice a day. I, too, get dizzy upon rising sometimes. I am 67.
It helps to know where others are in their journey. I do believe my doctor and I will be talking about what is best.

I think my surgery was right before yours...1/9/2014...so we are at about the same place. I am on beta blockers also. At rehab they use a percieved exersion scale since my heart rate never gets too high. Today I was able to do 35 minutes on the treadmill at a 3.8 speed and 4% incline. I got tired...but a good workout kind of tired. I do notice that if I am sitting at a long meeting at work I can get really sleepy...I blame the beta blocker...not the meeting.
Hope they are able to adjust your meds so you feel better.

You are so right. Today I was celebrating so much positive that I over did. I drove for the first time which in itself is more chest movement than first thought. Then I went to a gathering and had lunch with friends. It was all too much. Thank you for your needed reminder.

Hi Judi, glad to read your getting better and getting help since your surgery. It really does take time to get your strength back and heart surgery is a life changing experience in so many ways. So take your time and don't push yourself to do to much to fast. Pray, Eat and Laugh, it will be health to your whole person. I'll be praying for you too.

I unfortunately had the flu the day I was scheduled to see my surgeon (for the 3 week post visit, which was already almost 5 weeks). Such is life. I continue to heal and do cardio rehab 3 mornings a week. I'll see the surgeon in 2 weeks. We'll discuss return to work date then. Keep healing and keep the faith (which I know is strong for you).

You do realize 7 is the perfect number in scripture. God indeed has you in the palm of His hand. Memorize a scripture. It helps in calming the nerves. Hold all the people you know that will be in your surgery and recovery to the Lord. Work with Him in paving this road. I'm already looking forward to good news.

The meds are daunting. So many to take at so many times! I'm a tech guy so I used a pill app on my iPad and 3 alarms on my iPad to keep my pill schedule working. A low tech way would be a paper checklist with alarm clocks. It is work but as we know it is critical for our recovery. Good luck!

Judi, if you are a member of a church, please reach out to your pastor and congregation for assistance. They can help prepare meals, help with cleaning and errands, etc. Do not stress yourself out over this. It is so important for you to take and get proper care of yourself. My prayers are with you.

Trust us you will need someone to help with things for the first week, assuming no complications. I'm not sure how to say it or stress it to your husband, but he or someone needs to help you for at least a week. But i understand relationships and their dynamics. At this point it's not about them, it's about you and your physical healing. You have to heal properly to be able to help your family later. Friday will be 4 weeks post op for me and I can't do certain tasks (lifting, stretching, bending over). It takes time. I will continue to pray for you and your family.

You hit the nail on the head when you said it isn't about them any more. I am an outgoing person and helper. They see me a different light. Sometimes my requests don't match what they want to do for me. Today is better. Thanks for your response and I am praying for your return to 'normal' activity.

Judi,
Great news. Very good to hear from you,
Take it one step at a time, listen to the nurses and doctor. I found that reaching and stretching were the hardest habits to break, especially once I have been home for two weeks and felt I was getting better. So careful with reaching and stretching ( like stuff in the washing machine or hanging stuff up). We think we can do it, but need to wait a bit.

Judi, I know you are now two days post surgery, and I wanted you to know I have been keeping you in my prayers and hoping everything went smoothly. You mentioned you didn't know if you could get anyone to post for you, so I assume that's why we haven't heard from you yet. I'm not sure my husband will post for me either when my time comes, so don't worry about it. Just concentrate on your recovery!
