Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story. I\'m going to Mt. Sinai in another month for my first meeting with Dr. Adams. As I continue to read here I start getting doubts and thinking about the Da Vinci option at CC and others, but really reassuring to read your posts on Mt. Sinai and Dr. Adams. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the post on my guestbook last week. I\'m glad to hear that you\'re continuing to move down the \"long and winding road\" of valve surgery recovery with steady progress.
We had the same Mt Sinai surgeons. Like you, Doctors David Adams and Ani Anyanwu repaired both my mitral and tricuspid valves (plus I had a maze procedure). Like you, it was a re-repair operation. And like you, I continue to realize what a blessing it was (and is) to have had such superb medical care.

I just went back and read your journal, and your husband\'s beautiful entry about what it was like on the other side of the surgery doors. You\'ve got yourself a keeper, there! After 7 days, I can hardly imagine how it must have felt to have to go back through those swinging doors for another surgery. Thank God for the people like Dr. A, and the folks who went before him, you got a second chance.

I\'m new to the online valve community. I\'m so glad to hear that your re-repair went so well. You and I have some things in common. Dr Adams and his team at Mt Sinai will try to re-repair my mitral valve on March 13. Possibly they\'ll also work on my tricuspid valve, which on the echos appears to display slight leakage. I\'d greatly appreciate any words of wisdom or advice you have about Mt Sinai, what to expect, etc. Feel free to post on my guestbook.

Hi Gayle, I am Linda, a \"newbie\". I have severe aortic stenosis and a dilated aorta and will be having surgery soon although I do not have a date yet. I am going from South Carolina to Cleveland Clinic for my surgery. I have had much the same experience regarding being referred somewhere else for surgery. My cardiologist says I would do fine having it done here, but I have also done a lot of research and am going where they do lots and lots of valve surgeries. I assume you are either back in Idaho or on your way. When you get settled in I would love to hear how your traveling went. I hate that it is so far to go, it will be inconvenient, but I just feel like it is what I need to do. Hope you are feeling much better and on the way to full recovery.

Traveling back home was a bit of a challenge. You can walk certainly, but I was at the 2 week mark, post surgery, so I was going pretty slowly. Other patients on this site have noted the post surgery water retention; usually that is treated with Lasix in the hospital, but I had some residual fluid in my right lung and fluid in both my feet.
I had a pair of slippers handy for our flight home which really helped. I recommend those suede/sheepskin type with the rubber soles. Not all of the airports have the "people movers" so I found it difficult navigating about. You may need to request a ride on one of those special transport carts inside the airport or a wheelchair. We had plenty of time between flights but that is not always possible.
I don't for one second regret having made the long journey that we did. My surgeons at Mt. Sinai did a fantastic job. I have also heard great things about the Cleveland Clinic. Looking forward to reading your updates.

Gayle, wonderful to hear that you are doing better. I just had a mini thoracatomy robot assisted repair of my mitral valve on Dec 8. Reading about your experience, I know I will be looking in the rear view mirror. My surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic Dr. Gillinov is also only recommending pig valves for replacement because he says they have overcome many of the obstacles to doing valve replacement through catherization procedures. Hopefully this will becaome a reality in 5-10 years and future generations won\'t have to go through what we have been through. Venkat.
