Funny you should ask if i charmed the nurses. The first face i saw waking up was my beautiful wife and head nurse nancy, sitting by the gurney. My feet hanging off the end made for some interesting conversation. After my ohs they had a bed extender but not for this. my appointment was for 1:45 pm. At 9 am they were already on the phone asking me to drop everything and come in due to cancellations. So all those pre op instructions were out the window. Finally got in at 11 after some rushing around. Fastest enema and shower ever. In that order of course. My first enema in 82 years . ugh. Hopefully my last. Give me the colonoscopy pills any day. What cemented my nurse bond was when we got around to talking about dogs. Swapping photos and stories. At one point i had a cluster of 4 while the other poor patients had to wait their turns. Oh well. Nancy said later that i’m full of it. No idea what she meant by that. Lol.

Your prayers and from others are welcomed as i get closer to biopsy day. My mri results showed 80% positive for prostate cancer so my hopeful result will be that it is the slow growing variety. If i fall in the 20% category so much the better. The mri showed no spreading to adjoining lymph nodes. I have opted to be asleep for this procedure as a couple of friends chose to be awake and advised me against it. A couple of comparisons gave me the chills. Its like colonoscopy anesthesia.

As for the colonoscopy sleep, I loved my nap for that one :) I was pretty silly when I woke up though. My niece was with me and she said I kept thanking the Dr and nurses and saying how nice they were. They just kept smiling at me

Deena Elani My surgery was at 7am and I was not conscious until the middle of that night. —-Off and on, for seconds at-a-time.. Then as soon as I woke up the next morning, seemingly more fully “awake”, the ICU nurse said let’s get you out of bed and sitting in the chair. Didn't really work that well, because my BP dropped, but that is the drill. That night I slept like a log from like 5pm onward. ICU care was outstanding.

Andrea Babcock Hi Deena. Glad that you made it through the surgery. Now every day will be a little better and once you are home you will feel better. First week is the hardest part. Best Wishes. My husband had a really good outcome after Aortic and Mitral valve replacement with mechanical. Yesterday was 2 month Valveversary and he is doing really great. The scar has healed nicely. Wishing you the same.

I did ask about a waiting list knowing they only do these twice a month anyway. One issue is i need to stop aspirin a week ahead and finding a new place might also chew up more time. Resigned to waiting 3 weeks. Then waiting for results, then choosing a plan of action, then getting it done. All time consuming. Prostate cancer is common in older men and mri showed 80% likelihood. Slow growing or fast growing is what will determine next step.

Richard Munson I good question. A little friend that shares my bedroom ( not nancy) decided he needed to go outside at 4:30 am and take care of business. My vast experience with dogs says when the want to go, don’t ask questions. I felt a presence on the bed and when i opened my eyes he was standing and staring. Now he is snoring but i am awake.

Pamela Gregory Richard, I will be praying for the best news, but if this ends up being cancer I want you to know about my brother in law who had "proton therapy" for his prostate cancer and is doing great. It targets the cancer and spares the surrounding tissue with minimal side effects. He swears he had no side effects. Not sure where they do it because he traveled to Jacksonville, Fl. but I am sure the do it at Penn Medicine in PA too. Probably further north near you by now too.

Deena Elani Rob, I am doing really well. Heart rate stabilized after 14 months to low 60s, so much lower than pre-surgery. BP about the same. I have not slowed down! But I do reflect often on my heart journey and how to increase meaning to my life. (That is, value my time more:)

Standing in the cold for 9 hours not my idea of fun, though my way younger self would have begged to differ. My husband, though, did it and said the same as you. Once is enough. I watched it via large screen last night! And, yep, needed tea to stay up.
