Meredith Bray Usually patients with biological valves (rather than mechanical) do take anti-coagulant (warfarin, coumidin) for a period of time after surgery. I have a mechanical valve, and I will take the medicine for the rest of my life. I have had no problems with the medicine!

Catie B David, I was told bio valves are "sticky" for the first few weeks after they are placed, and that early on there is a higher risk for the new valve to cause a clot and induce a stroke. Sometimes they prescribe aspirin or another antiplatelet, and yes, some surgeons put patients on warfarin for a few weeks. I wouldn't think they would have you on warfarin very long unless you suffer from afib.
