Cheryl, I had a fifth grade student once that said, "Her mother told her to question everything." This was a surprise comment, but is good advice actually. Keep asking questions until you feel that you are completely informed, and you are confident in the decisions you make. Best wishes!

I had a mechanical valve implanted 6 weeks ago today. I can hear the valve when its quiet but in day to day life, I don't hear it. I hear a small chirping like a very tiny cricket is in my ear. When laying down it does get louder and worse if I lay on my left side. I am getting used to it. I have asked my family if they can hear the valve and they can't. I have found having a mechanical hasn't been a huge inconvenience so far. I personally would rather get a mechanical and be done with the surgery rather than knowing I would have to have a tissue valve replaced again.

Cheryl Wicks Thank you Marci. I am scheduled to have surgery on Feb 3rd and my head is spinning with second guessing myself with the decisions I have made. I am trying to stay positive, but I keep thinking of all these different questions. As the date is approaching my emotions are up and down. Anxious to get it over with and yet afraid how my life will change. I hope you continue to do well with your recovery. Thank you again.

Hi Cheryl! Will you have your own INR testing machine at home? I was stressed in the beginning too! Having your own machine to monitor your INR helps a great deal! I also keep in touch with my coumadin nurse from my hospital (texting her my #s) Technology these days is AWESOME!!! :)

Cheryl, glad you have a date. Feb. 3rd will be a re-birthday for you. The question about Brocholli and other green veggies is a good one. My son is on Coumadin and it is my understanding that these green veggies, especially brocholli work against the Coumadin and reduce its effectiveness. It will play havoc with your lab numbers, but check it out on the web. Have a great day.

Hi Cheryl,
I was diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis July 3, 2012. Since then I've been waiting for a symptom to help me make a decision about surgery and when to have it. During the past 17 months, I've stressed about it quite a bit, yet I'm still hesitant to throw myself on the gurney. Unless, you have to make a decision right away, I think getting an opinion or two from other surgeons would be helpful. I'm 65 and two surgeons are aware of and monitoring my heart issue. They both have recommended the bovine valve which "can last up to 20 years" , then to be replaced with the TVAR procedure if necessary. This seems acceptable to me since I, as others mentioned, would hate to give up my green veggies, and the idea of lifelong meds doesn't work for me either. Keep researching until you are completely confident in the surgeon and his/her favored procedure. It is your heart!

Hello Cheryl, 3 years ago I had my aortic valve replaced with a cow valve at the CC. A year in a half later it started to leak, a tear in one of the leaflets. 5 weeks ago I had it replace with a mechanical valve. Theres no guarantees that theses Tissue valves will last 10 or 15 years thats for sure. If I had to do round one all over again I would have gone with a Mechanical valve. To go thru this car wreak twice I dont know what I was thinking. I would take Blood thinners anytime before I would have to go thru this again. I wish you all the best.

Hi Cheryl, I am 40 yrs old and I had severe aortic stenosis. I had my valve replaced October 29/13 and decided on having a mechanical valve . I am so happy with my choice, yes I am on blood thinners for life but it is well managed and have faith if I take good care of myself and monitor may dose I should be fine. My surgeon also said the valve should last for life and I could not imagine doing this surgery again im10-15 yrs. I am very active and I am looking forward to remaining that way. Any questions feel free to email me. Keep in mind I did a lot of research and it wasn't an easy decision. Take care and good luck
