Education, Training & Certificates

Dr. Torsten Vahl, interventional cardiologist, graduated from Philipps University in Marburg, Germany in 1988.

After medical school, Dr. Vahl completed his residency in internal medicine in 2008 and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease in 2012 at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. He then completed fellowships in interventional cardiology in 2013 and structural interventions in 2014 at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

At Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Vahl is Co-Director, Structural Heart and Valve Center , the Director of Translational Research and an attending physician at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Dr. Vahl specializes in advanced percutaneous therapies for coronary artery disease and structural heart disease, with particular expertise in transcatheter heart valve interventions. His clinical focus includes transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement (TMVR), transcatheter tricuspid valve repair and replacement (TTVR), and left atrial appendage closure.

A leader in the development and evaluation of emerging structural heart technologies, Dr. Vahl has directed multiple preclinical and first-in-human studies through his work with the Cardiovascular Research Foundation. He serves as the national principal investigator for the ALIGN-AR trial, building on his earlier involvement in the preclinical development of the technology. Dr. Vahl also trains and proctors interventional cardiologists in advanced transcatheter procedures, including TAVR with the Trilogy valve and TMVR with the Cephea valve.

In addition, Dr. Vahl has helped advance less-invasive approaches to left atrial appendage closure by developing an intracardiac echocardiography program that allows selected patients to undergo the procedure without general anesthesia or transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). His work reflects a strong commitment to advancing structural heart innovation while making complex cardiovascular procedures safer and less invasive for patients.

Dr. Vahl is board-certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular computed tomography.
