Cardiologist who reviewed the Echo stated I would probably need open heart surgery due to mitral valve and aortic aneurysm. Isn't open heart procedure "old school"? I've read were both repairs can be done with non-evasive surgery. What conditions may prevent me being a candidate for the minimal evasive type surgery? I guess I'll know more this afternoon after meeting with Cardiac Surgeon?

Rita Savelis OHS is not really old school, it's really common and necessary and the best choice in many cases. Depending on your particular situation and personal case, a minimally-invasive surgery may be possible. Surgeon will let you know.

Patti Talbot I had minimally invasive (which was plenty invasive!) to repair my mitral valve. I was told a lot depends on surgeons skill - so ask around. I don't know if they aortic issue makes it more or less possible. Good luck today!

Jeff V. The surgeon will likely prefer full access to give you the best possible repair for both problems. Follow the docs lead. They should be able to tell you, with a high degree of certainty, if your MV is repairable or needs replacement. You want a surgeon who has done many similar repairs.

Petey Bello Michael, get a couple of opinions. You will feel better with making your decisions. Mine was suppose to be minimally invasive to repair my mitral valve (which they still state it was, because I didn't have a Sternotomy. I have a mini-thoracotomy) but my incision was 5" & above my right breast because I had a difficult repair (both leaflets very damaged) he had to make a bigger incision further up on my chest to have better access. Each case if different.
Good luck!

Lenore Mitchell Just to reiterate what others have said, it's not a matter of surgeon's skill in deciding on OHS vs Robotic or minimally invasive approaches to any valve repair. Rather, it's a matter of exactly what a patient needs and what approach will lead to success. Also, it's important for the surgeon/hospital to do a series of tests pre-operatively to help determine what approach is possible and best. Any good surgeon can do both open and minimally invasive surgeries, but the decision depends on several factors.

Wanda Mroz And the decision is always your and what your gut tells you. After it was all said and done, I had a choice of minimally invasive or OHS... I chose the conventional way because my inner voice said it was right for me. And I've never regretted that. Best wishes that all goes smoothly. 💞
Good luck!
