TAVR or SAVR: Durability and Bicuspid Valves with Dr. Kenan Yount

For patients with severe aortic stenosis, choosing between transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) can be difficult. In this video, Dr. Kenan Yount of Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville explains why the decision should involve the patient, a cardiac surgeon, and a cardiologist. He reviews current durability findings, including why outcomes may be similar at five years and why certain surgical valves may demonstrate advantages as follow-up approaches seven to eight years.

Dr. Yount also discusses how a bicuspid aortic valve can influence treatment selection. Younger, active patients or those with substantial valve calcification may be better suited for SAVR, while certain patients with milder bicuspid anatomy may still qualify for TAVR.
