How Bacterial Endocarditis Damages Heart Valves

Bacterial endocarditis can develop when bacteria enter the bloodstream, attach to a heart valve, and begin growing on the valve. In this video, Dr. Laura DiChiacchio explains how the infection can damage valve tissue and cause symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, reduced energy, and difficulty maintaining normal activity.

Dr. DiChiacchio also reviews how bacterial endocarditis is treated, beginning with intravenous antibiotics and careful monitoring of the patient and affected valve. When the infection has produced significant growth or vegetation, surgery may be required to remove the infected tissue and repair or replace the heart valve.
