Surgeon Q&A: Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Aortic Root Enlargement
In this video, Dr. Ciro Amodio, Director of the Aorta Program at the University of Miami Health System, answers an important patient question about bicuspid aortic valve disease, aortic root enlargement and an associated aortic aneurysm. He explains that bicuspid aortic valves are commonly linked to disease of the aorta and discusses why surgeons often evaluate the valve and aneurysm together when determining the safest treatment approach.
Dr. Amodio also clarifies when an aortic root enlargement procedure may be appropriate and why it may not be necessary when the root is already dilated. He reviews the importance of the aortic annulus, preoperative CT scans and echocardiograms, and explains how options such as annular reinforcement, valve replacement and ascending aorta replacement may help treat the condition while potentially avoiding coronary artery reimplantation.
