Looking forward to my six month anniversary on April 17th.
Diagnosed last August with severe aortic stenosis, and after a cardiac catherization it was determined that I had a bicuspid aortic valve. After much research I chose to have my surgery performed by Dr. Syeven Xydas at Mt Sinai Hospital in Miami. Chose him because he performs valve replacements via a mini thoracotomy which uses a four inch incision between the ribs on my right side. My valve was replaced with an Edwards prosthetic valve.
BTW, I celebrated my seventy-third birthday in the hospital.
Recovery was very, very easy. Didn't need anything but Tylenol after the first day, and that was only for a day. Had a quick boat of arrhythmia on the third day which kept me in the hospital for an extra day. When I was sent home I was given a beta blocker, but only for thirty days. At home, first week or two had trouble sleeping, etc. but absolutely no pain.
Forty-seven days after the operation I played a round of golf, (not very well), but was able to play! Was a little week afterwards so I gave it a day or two before trying again. Soon I was back to my normal routine of three times per week.
Now looking forward to my anniversary, I have a regular routine of golf and gym three times per week and exercise bike at home. I really do feel better than I did pre-operation.
For anyone contemplating this type of surgery, please realize the many benefits it can have for your life. It's certainly scary going in but believe me, much better days are ahead.
