Hi All. It has been six weeks today since my AVR and Aorta repair. I\'m feeling better. I do rehab 3 times per week plus go to gym on off days for treadmill and bike. My biggest issue has been sleep. Not because of pain. That is minimal now. Just periodic pain around sternum area. I think more muscular from rehab. I\'m dealing with insomnia. Once I get to sleep I\'m ok, it\'s getting to sleep that is issue. Docs and rehab coordinator have told me I\'m doing well. Off all meds except lipitor, fish oil, and aspirin. Going back to work next week. A little nervous about that but it has to be done sometime.

It is one week post surgery for AVR, and three days home. Some good times some not so good. Trying to figure out pain meds. Percoset gets pain but gives me goofy feelings, Tylenol takes edge of pain but for not long. Real shoulder and collarbone pain. I\'m not sure how I am holding shoulders protecting chest is causing shoulder issues.shoulder rubs really help. Over all a week in I guess not so bad. taking walks times daily. Made it out driveway and down 2 houses. May not mean much to most but that is good distance. One week ago today I was prepping for surgery, today I\'m talking about it. WOW!! A lot of emotions running right now!

Hi All. Tony here. I got home yeterday afternoon.A day early. Not a piece of cake but very do-able. Just glad to be past the sugery and on to my part of the recovery. Read Adam\'s book before surgery. It does scare you but also gives you piece of mind. I walked out to mailbox twice yesterday after gettiing home. I felt like a VERY happy old man

He has a very positive attitude, appears much calmer to me than prior to surgery. The staff is very impressed with how much he knew about what to expect and how to care for himself, do the inspiromemter etc. I am so grateful for the book and this site

It is 3 1/2 days away. Not much I can do at this point but wait. Trying to stay calm and distracted. I keep telling myself I will be just fine. I feel out of control right now and I\'m not a big fan of that. I want the surgery to come and be over so I can start the rehab and know I will be in more control.
I had a pretty good cry yesterday and a little pity party for myself. Past it now.

It is 6 days until my surgery. AVR plus part of my aorta because it has started to dialate. I have decided on the tissue valve. Getting nervous and so is Carolyn. I just want it over with now. A week from now it will be done and I can move on with my life. Thanks to all who have responded to my posts. It has helped a lot. It even helps to read some of the other journals. I guess it helps to hear about other people in same boat.

On another subject, I\'ve heard there might be some post op shoulder pain. This is because of arm position during surgery. Is there any stretching that can help ahead of time. I am in good shape now and would like to help with any pain prevention ahead of time.

I am 12 days away from my AVR. I still have to make decision on Bio-Valve or Mechanical Valve. I go back and forth. My cardiologist and sugeon said that my Heart Cath showed everything was clear and they do not expect to ever have to work on my heart again if I choose mechanical valve. I have questions like: Can you hear the mechanical valve? The sugeon says most of the time you do not. If I do the Bio-Valve will I worry about the clock starting to tick on when that needs to be replaced. Sugeon would not commit to future valve replacement being done through groing like heart cath (percutaneous).
