I had Aortic valve replacement surgery at Washington Hospital Medstar on July 7, 2021 and have noticed that my memory has suffered degradation since. Beginning as a child, I was forgetful, and since part of my normal behavior, noticed it worsened post surgery. I have researched Post Operative Cognitive Degradation, and Pump Head referring to the potential for complications due to the necessity of being on a Heart/Lung bypass machine for surgery. I took a cognitive test oral/written, and the results were negative for dementia. However, my "ditziness" has worsened since my test in 2019.

Martin Smith Hello Stephen, and welcome! It takes courage to begin a conversation about memory loss. Memory and mindfulness are affected by many factors, including of course, stress. OHS is stressful as you well know. Add that to a pandemic, instant and constant bad news at the press of a button, medications, imposed lifestyle changes, loss, the hyper-vigilance to symptoms that we tend to experience pre- and post-op and the ageing process itself and there you have a brain fog martini shaken AND stirred! Marie Myers Martin has said it well. The aging process itself predisposes us to slower thinking and more difficulty finding words and thoughts. Discussing this Concern with your doc is the best advice, along with doing heart/brain healthy things like exercise and eating well. Keep. Your BP and cholesterol in check also. I feel The same concerns as you, and since I carry one of the late-onset Alzheimer’s genes, I am well aware of the risk myself. Wishing you all the best!

Richard Munson Marie, i also suffer from CRS but i always attributed it more to age and genes than my heart surgery. Some folks have memory issues at much younger ages than others. I noticed short term memory issues rather than long term. I vividly remember my first date but not sure if a had corn flakes this morning.
