Dear all,
I'm 25 years old. Recently I have found out that I have bicuspid aortic valve. My doctor said that I need aortic valve replacement with mechanical valve. I just want to know, is mechanical valve good for me at this age? Is there anyone had such operation?
Please share tur thoughts

MANJU Kumar hi there, my partner received the mechanical valve at age 31. This is often the safest choice for younger patients as you won’t need reoperation (likely) with this valve as it will long much longer than tissue valve. Depending on what the problem is you might qualify for the ross procedure (this is a longer procedure and often risks associated with it). This might last you longer than the tissue valve but you will likely need a resurgery in your 15-20 years.
Mechanical valves make a ticking noise. I can hear my partners ticking noise pretty much every time. I would google and find videos on what this noise sounds like. If you are someone where little noise will bother you, going with the mechanical valve might not be the best choice. I did hear that this noise goes down or people get very used to it. So really depends on your personality.
If you don’t want to risk open heart surgery again then mechanical valve is good for you. Get a second opinion and do your research with multiple different doctors. MY Partner did not do this as he said he trusted the system but i definitely suggest doing your research and getting a second opinion.

Alex Hunt Hi Shakhboz. I'm 34 and have had a mechanical valve for a couple of months. Tissue valves typically wear out quicker in younger patients (I was quoted 5 years by my surgeon) so mechanical seemed like the logical choice. I am just sensitive to noises but have got used to the clicking. Warfarin is easy to manage as well. Good luck with your decision.

Trusha Prema Thank you Manjuben and all for sharing this story thread. This is helpful as I am to meet my cardiologist and surgeon to discuss my options considering it s a re-op (mitral repair 6 years ago). My other concern is blood thinners and its impact on daily life but also travelling overseas. I am 56 years old. Thanks so much.
