Met my surgeon today, Dr. Shemin of UCLA. I was diagnosed with Bicuspid AVR 5 years ago and have been monitoring it ever since. Well the time has finally come and it’s time for my surgery. After meeting with Dr. Shemin and due to my age of 37 we decided that a mechanical valve was really the only way to go. I am not too happy about being on Coumadin the rest of my life but reading and watching several stories of other patients has really helped me. My question to everyone that is currently on Coumadin would be has it affected your daily lifestyle that much? What are some of the side affects and risks? Have you had to change your diet? Can you do the same things you did pre-surgery? I have so many questions and am new to the board. After reading Adam’s book I found his website and have been so relieved to read many of your stories. I would love any suggestions or stories of many of you that have or had a similar situations as mine. Thank you!

Toni Z Welcome! I’m 6 days post surgery and surprisingly not a lot of pain. I’m still adjusting to Coumadin and just learning to live with it. This is a great site for tips and insight on what to expect next. Good luck with your upcoming surgery and recovery!
