Lucky stroke last August (apparently caused by Afib) led to discovery of 6.2 cm Aortic ascending aneurysm. 3 months post open heart surgery: Aortic root replacement (valve spared) + MAZE + APPENDAGE CLIP to prevent future strokes. Doing great overall. My question to you all who struggle with High BP. How many meds do you take to keep BP under 130? I am on 3 meds now: Metroprolol 50mg x 2 a day, Olmesartan 40mg, Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5. And, baby aspirin daily. PA can't give me a clear answer on why I have 3 meds to treat one condition - high BP. Another month before I am seeing doctor so I can ask him that same question. What is your experience? Please share.

Marie Myers Wow, you are lucky indeed! Finding that size aneurysm definitely saved your life. As far as the BP goes, it isn’t unusual to be on 2 meds; my husband is on losartan and amlodipine. If you have tried low sodium diet, increased activity, better fitness, and /or weight loss (if appropriate), the doctor could try different drugs to see if you get a better response. You could ask about ruling out other diagnosis that contribute to high blood pressure like adrenal cysts, renal artery stenosis, kidney disease, sleep apnea ect. Lots of reasons for high blood pressure, including getting older!

Richard Munson I also take metropolol, amlodipine for bp and eliquis for a fib stroke protection. Been reading bad things about hydroclorathyside ( couldn’t they find an easier name to spell?) used to take aspirin. Eliquis also thins blood. Also had maze during mitral valve surgery but they neglected to do appendage clip for some reason. My ascending anerurism is 4.1 so you are very lucky. My future plans are to reduce the dosage of metropolol and eliquis. I sense a fight coming with my cardiologist but i am a lot bigger than him.

Rose Madura I took Lisinopril before surgery 10 mg. 5-1/2 years after surgery, I take Amlodipine 2.5 mg, Metoprolol 25 mg and baby aspirin every other day. I do know that the Amlodipine and Metoprolol work together. When I went off Amlodipine once (family doctor took me off), I ended up with PVCs so my cardiologist put me back on it and all is well. Hope this helps.

Klara Čičić Marie said it perfectly. All I could add is that there are 2 in 1 and even 3 in 1 pills nowdays. In Europe at least. So, for example three antihypertensive drugs: beta blocker, diuretic and ACE inhibitor all in one pill. Or another combination. Maybe ask your cardiologist is it available there. That way patient compliance is a lot better and everyone's happier.
