After being unemployed for a while, I recently found a temp-to-perm position with which I am the primary provider for my family. Now after 3 months at this job, my surgeon has decided that it is time for me to get my valve replaced and my aneurysm repaired. Since I am currently a temp, I know there is very little chance that they will hold my job for me while I am unable to work, but my concern for the mean time is how we will be able to afford our bills while I am recovering. I know that valve replacements don't qualify for disability, and aneurysm repairs only qualify if it starts to dissect. I also know that I can't apply for unemployment because I am not "able to start working." My wife and I are at a loss for how to afford our mortgage and other bills while I am unable to work. I am not worried about paying for the surgery because our insurance will cover that, but I don't want to lose my house because I need to get surgery. Are there support programs for for this type of thing? I am at a loss, and right now this is the scariest part of my pending surgery...
