About Me (In My Own Words)
I'm having mitral valve repair also with CABG of two arteries.
History: Discovered I had mitral valve prolapse about 10 years ago during routine exam precipitated by super bad family history of heart disease. Was monitoring yearly with echocardiogram and it was not getting worse, so I slacked off on yearly monitory. Went back after Covid and found out it was now causing severe regurgitation and the cardiologist said surgery was probably a good course of action. Contacted Mass. General Hospital valve clinic for opinion and was told the same thing. I have no obvious symptoms and was told the current thinking is that a repair in someone who is relatively young and healthy (I'm 62) and asymptomatic is now being recommended.
Pre-surgical testing also showed some partial blockages in two coronary arteries so I'll be getting grafts of these while they've got me open.
Tips, advice, suggestions and support welcome. Surgery date is Feb. 14, '22. Open heart surgery on valentine's day seems fitting.
This is my first major surgery, first time in ICU, first time in hospital for more than one day, not counting my month in the NICU after being born. Pretty nervous about the whole thing.
