About Me (In My Own Words)
I have Aortic Bi-Valve Stenosis. I had open heart surgery on September 16th. I went in for a regular checkup. My doctor heard something odd with my heartbeat and followed up with tests. I'm in my 40s and was never told I had something wrong with my heart. So you can imagine when I got my diagnosis I can't even begin to tell you how shocked I was to hear the news.
The doctor explained my aortic valve is not properly opening and closing. There is also a birth defect. I only have two cusps, instead of the normal three. So, the blood flowing out from the heart gets trapped and won't flow back to my body. Pressure then builds up inside my heart and causes damage. I had an aortic valve replacement surgery. I was treated at Lenox Hill hospital in New York city and stayed in the hospital after the surgery for 5 days. The first week after the surgery was brutal.... but I had the care of amazing nurses and my surgeon. Once I was home, oh boy, it was hard. Sleeping sitting up and in constant pain for at least 4 weeks. It's almost 4 months now and there are still some very small pain issues just over left breast bone and the scar area. At my last appointment my doctor said everything looked good.
