About Me (In My Own Words)
I had a rupture to my mitral valve chordae that required emergency repair. This was considered a “freak accident”- that has no obvious cause. Since then, I have had a somewhat eventful recovery- experiencing atrial flutter just prior to starting rehab and then later a pericardial effusion requiring treatment. I have been informed that my ejection fraction, which was really good right after surgery has been declining and now is slow to recover- which has the doctor’s concerned that whatever caused the rupture may not be reversible. So, now, while my latest echo showed improvement with beta blocker, entresto and farxiga- I am getting lots of conflicting messages on my progress…too slow, depends on how I feel, doesn’t matter how I feel- all about the EF, takes time. I am confident that I am better every day- thanks to rehab and exercise- but for my wife and family- they are watching and worrying a LOT. So, I am going to see a heart failure specialist- so that I am connected in case I “need a transplant.” This is what is making me lose sleep at night…I have no CAD and have been very active and eaten well for most of my adult life- as a former college football player, sure I have had some extra weight and yes, there is some family history of mitral
Valve disease- but it was never acute for my brother or sister. I have 4 brothers and 2 sisters by the way…. As of now, I am almost done with rehab and while I know I need to be patient, I feel like this is a slow process- and I get that the doctors feel the same….any thoughts or input? Nor just for me- but for my wife, and my kids…22 and 18. Thanks- so very much.
