About Me (In My Own Words)
I am currently a 62 year old man who had aortic valve and aortic root replacement May 11, 2010. I was diagnosed with a leaky aortic valve at about the age of 20 and essentially ignored it for the next 20 years or so until my family doc insisted that I start getting regular ultrasounds. By the end of 2009, the aortic root began to dilate to 5 cm so my cardiologist felt I needed to have the valve replaced. My coronoary arteries were free of plaque, so other than the valve and the dilated root, I had no other cardiac abnormalities. Dr. Prem Shekar at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston did the surgery. I would highly recommend him. Three months after surgery, I was back to running a couple of miles several times a week and biking up to 60 miles per day on the weekend (20 to 25 miles during the week after work). I am not restricted to any activities. I would be happy to share my experiences with anyone!
