About Me (In My Own Words)
I am only 48, so this was a shock. Been feeling fatigued and chest pains, high blood pressure at times, diabetes recently. I would get out of breath so easy, which was not normal for me... just thought it was stress and I needed to eat better. My primary doc insisted I go see a cardiologist. Since I was feeling so bad, I decided I would. They thought I had a blockage in an artery and insisted on an angiogram. I hesitated but went ahead after the doc expressed his concern very convincingly. I am glad I did. I would never have guessed a birth defect was doing this... I had had times through the years my chest would hurt but it would go away. I have always been healthy and athletic... playing football, soccer, weightlifting, you name it. I was told I had a heart murmur when I was young, but they never seemed to think it would be a problem. Now looking back I know why. I have the bicuspid aortic valve. They say I have worn it out through the years with all my activity. My surgery is in two days. I am nervous but looking forward to feeling better soon. I am glad to have found this group. I had never heard of bicuspid aortic valve or aortic stenosis until now. So glad to finally know something.
